TheatreBIZ Chief Executive, Themi Venturas, has just returned from Washington, DC where he attended a Training course with the Kennedy centre production of SHEAR MADNESS. The Kennedy Centre production of America’s favourite comedy is in it’s 22 year and still going strong. Venturas had seen the production 15 years earlier in Boston  and had so enjoyed the fun of it all that he had sought the rights to do the production in South Africa. Part of the royalty agreement was Venturas going to Washington to receive instruction on how the show should unfold. Apart from seeing the show at the Kennedy Centre 8 times and chatting to the cast and crew, Venturas also received one on one instruction with Bob Lohrmann, Associate Artistic Director of SHEAR MADNESS.

“ Being in Washington over Halloween was an amazing experience. Witnessing hundreds of thousands of revelers in Georgetown on Halloween gave me fresh insight into this American celebration” said Venturas. ‘There was a palpable tension in the air with the impending elections with most in Washington rooting for Obama. We all know how that ended, yes we can!’

The Catalina will host the comedy for the festive season giving families something different to enjoy this Festive season. In between all the musical theatre and musical revue fair, TheatreBIZ is offering something different. A hilarious comedy for the whole family combining the experience of award-winning actors Clare Mortimer and Michael Gritten, with the talents of Daisy Spencer, Marc Kay, Loyiso McDonald and Dhaveshan Govender under the direction of Themi Venturas. Set in fashionable Florida Rd, SHEAR MADNESS has been successfully adapted with enough local content to which Durban audiences can relate.

“Let’s face it, we have our fair share of bumbling cops on the Berea! Let alone Musgrave socialites, and wacky hairdressing assistants,” comments Venturas.

This comic whodunit promises intrigue and fun for all while the audience help solve the murder mystery every night. The Catalina Theatre has researched performance times with its audiences and has discovered that the audience is calling for more  matinee performances. To that end then the innovative management will be adding two low price matinees to the mix on Saturdays at 5pm and on Sundays at 2pm. Tickets to these performances will be available on a Buy-one-get-one-free basis. Normal performance times will be Thurs, Fri and Sat at 8pm and Sun at 6pm. Bookings can be made on 3056889 or online through Group discounts are available on enquiry. The only thing better than laughing alone is laughing in a group of friends, so come on Durban bring your friends and laugh along with the madcap antics of SHEAR MADNESS previewing on 27 November! Ca Durban come out in their droves to support this fun production? Yes we can!

“ It amazes me that this production is still pulling Full houses in America after 20-something years. Maximum madness! Maximium fun!”
